The fall out of the peace talks in Alaska seemed inevitable, because it was clear that Russia would still demand recognition of Crimea and Donbas, Ukraine was going to refuse territorial concessions and Trump’s approach might under these circumstances lean towards transactional diplomacy, but no breakthrough could emerge out of it, if Russia would not agree voluntary with the locating of Western peace troops close to its boundaries.
